For every grocery run, there’s a bill. For every late-night food delivery, there’s a delivery fee. And when you’re living alone, there’s no one to split the cost with.

Social media has made living alone look desirable and aesthetic: waking up in your own space, cooking for yourself, going wherever you want and ending the day with a little treat. But behind the carefully curated routines is the less glamorous reality of having to shoulder everything yourself, from rent and utilities to groceries, household supplies and the occasional unexpected expense.

The freedom of living alone comes with a price: You are the only one footing the bill.

It’s easy to think of expenses individually. ₱280 for a small cup of matcha from Matcha Tokyo doesn’t sound that bad. Neither does ₱300 for dinner at a newly opened restaurant in Makati or a ₱100 delivery fee for your late-night cravings. But repeat those purchases often enough, and suddenly, your “little treats” have become a significant part of your monthly budget.

And those are only the fun expenses.

The less glamorous purchases can be just as relentless. A trip to the grocery store means buying everything from food and toiletries to cleaning supplies and laundry detergent. Running out of something as simple as dish soap isn’t just an inconvenience; it’s another item on the shopping list.

When you live with other people, these costs can be divided between several wallets. Living alone means every bottle, bill and bag of groceries is yours to pay for.

Your convenience comes at a cost. And that convenience is tempting.

Too tired to cook after a long day? Order food. Forgot to buy groceries? Have them delivered. Laundry piling up? Send it to a laundry shop. Need something immediately? Grab it from the nearest convenience store.

None of these choices are inherently irresponsible. Sometimes, convenience is exactly what you need. But when these small decisions become habits, they can quietly eat away at your budget.

Sometimes, they don’t just eat your budget but your sanity, too.

Sure, the freedom of choice is yours. You can decide when to eat, what to watch, when to sleep and how to spend your weekend without having to consider anyone else’s schedule.

But we are social people, and we can get lonely after being cooped up for too long.

There is a certain appeal to doing everything alone. You don’t have to wait for someone else to be available, compromise on where to eat or coordinate schedules. Want to watch a movie after work? Go. Craving a specific restaurant? Book a table. Want to spend an entire afternoon browsing a bookstore? Nobody’s stopping you.

But that freedom is often tied to spending.

The easiest way to reward yourself after a long day is often to buy something. A coffee. A meal. A new shirt. A Grab ride instead of taking the packed train. One purchase might not seem significant, but when treating yourself becomes part of your regular routine, the expenses can pile up.

This is where the romanticized version of solo living becomes complicated.

Social media can make spending on yourself feel like a requirement of enjoying your own company. Every weekend becomes an opportunity to try a new cafe, visit a new market or book another Pilates session. The experience becomes something to document, and the spending becomes part of the lifestyle.

But is solo living only worth it if you spend?

It doesn’t have to be.

A good way to maintain a balance between pleasure and practicality is one worth thinking about. After all, enjoying your own company shouldn’t have to mean constantly spending money. There are plenty of ways to make a day feel special without necessarily opening your wallet.

For every matcha cup, there’s a price tag.
